Terpene Profile

Terpene Profile

Our testing can identify your product’s unique terpene profile—one of the key factors in building brand identity.

Terpenes are aromatic organic compounds known as hydrocarbons and are naturally occurring in many plants and a few other species, such as insects. Terpenes are sometimes confused or used interchangeably with terpenoid.  Terpenoids, unlike terpenes, are not hydrocarbons but are instead derived from terpenes. They form when terpenes go through a denaturing oxidation process during drying or curing of a flower. Terpenoids have additional functional groups that are not present in hydrocarbons such as terpenes.  Most of the “terpenes” in the cannabis flower (about 60%) are actually terpenoids.

In the late 2010’s, researchers investigating the medicinal properties of the cannabis plant started zeroing in on the importance of the terpene/terpenoid profile rather than the previously studied THC/CBD profile. Initially, many believed that the role of terpenes was limited to the aroma and flavor profiles of the product.  This interested growers who desired to produce a consistent product for the consumer. However, as evidence is now pointing to the medicinal benefits of terpenes/terpenoids have, this profile is taking on a new meaning for consumers.

Terpenes/terpenoids is an exciting field, with over 140 that have been identified. At One Bond Laboratories, we work with our clients to determine the profile that best matches their products. If it is important to you, it’s important to us, and we will tailor our approach to fit your needs. In addition to the data, One Bond Laboratories strives to provide you with the information that you need.
